GREEN
RIVER MAP
The
Green River originates in the high Rocky Mountains of Wyoming
near the Continental Divide. It flows southward from the base
of the mountains through a long highland valley full of wildlife
into Utah and Colorado.
The
emerald green waters and ponderosa pine enshrouded shores of the
Green River are irresistible to most visitors. Catching
a large rainbow trout on a dry fly in this environment is the
quest and dream of most serious fly fishers. There is no better
place in the world to consistently catch large rainbow trout on
flies than on the Green River. Our map also contains a hatch
chart.
The most famous
and most productive section of the river is called the DAM TO
LITTLE HOLE. This stretch contains spectacular scenery and is
approximately seven and one-half miles long.
The middle
section of the river flows eight miles from LITTLE HOLE TO BROWNS
PARK. Browns Park is a long, mountain-rimmed valley named after
Baptiste Brown, an early fur trader who inhabited the area. This
river section is unpredictable much of the year since it is subject
to silting from Red Creek during spring runoff and the frequent
flash floods of summer. The fishing is often very good but timing
is of the essence.
The lower
section of the river flows thirteen and one-half miles from Browns
Park to the Colorado State Line through SWALLOW CANYON. This section
of the river receives less fishing pressure and is reputed to
be the home of very large brown trout.

History
The Exploration
of the Green River began in 1825 when General William Henry Ashley
and his party floated down the river in hide-covered boats scouting
for rendezvous sites for fur traders. Twenty-four years later
(1849), William Lewis Manly and six companions left Wyoming to
float the river in hopes of reaching the California gold fields
ahead of the crowd. Disaster hit when they wrecked their boats
in the Red Canyon but they hewed out dugout canoes and continued
their journey down river.
